Hackney launches new additional and selective licensing schemes from 1 May 2026

The London Borough of Hackney launched new additional and selective landlord licensing schemes on 1 May 2026. The additional licensing scheme covers HMOs with three or more tenants from two or more households. The selective licensing scheme covers specified wards.

The schemes replace the previous licensing designations. Accredited landlords may be eligible for reduced fees.

Unlicensed lettings are a criminal offence carrying fines of up to £30,000 and tenants can claim rent repayment orders for up to two years under the Renters' Rights Act.

Action required

If you let property in Hackney, check whether your property falls within the designated areas. Apply for the appropriate licence before letting or face fines of up to £30,000 and potential rent repayment orders now extended to two years' rent.
