MEES landlord guidance updated to confirm EPC Band C requirement and £10,000 cost cap by 2030

Sourcegov.uk

The domestic MEES landlord guidance on GOV.UK was updated on 5 May 2026 to reflect the government's confirmed policy. All domestic private rented properties in England must meet EPC Band C or equivalent by 1 October 2030. Landlords must invest up to £10,000 per property on qualifying energy efficiency improvements before claiming an exemption.

Action required

Review the updated guidance and assess your portfolio against the 2030 deadline. Properties currently rated D or below that cannot reach Band C within the £10,000 cap must be registered on the Exemptions Register.
