The government has published the official Renters' Rights Act Information Sheet that must be provided to all existing tenants with an assured or assured shorthold tenancy. The sheet explains the key changes to tenants' rights. Landlords must send it digitally or on paper by 31 May 2026.
The information sheet covers possession proceedings, notice periods, the end of fixed terms, rent increase rules, tenant rights including pets, and the requirement for written terms.
It must be sent to every named tenant. Oral-only tenancies are excluded but landlords with verbal agreements must instead provide a written record of specific tenancy terms.
Action required
Download the information sheet from GOV.UK and send it to every named tenant by 31 May 2026. Keep records of when and how it was sent. Failure to comply risks fines of up to £7,000 for a first offence and up to £40,000 for repeat offences.
Effective
Must be sent by 31 May 2026
