The Home Office published an updated Code of Practice for Right to Rent from October 2025, reflecting changes in immigration categories, document types, and the expanded use of the Home Office online checking service.

Key changes include: revised guidance on acceptable documents for different categories of migrants; updated procedures for EU, EEA and Swiss nationals; clarification on the use of biometric residence permits; and updated guidance on what constitutes a valid adjusted check.

Conducting right to rent checks in accordance with the current Code of Practice is essential to maintaining a statutory excuse against a civil penalty.
