Newham Council's borough-wide selective licensing scheme, launched in June 2023, remains in force until 31 May 2028. All private rented properties in the borough except in Royal Victoria and Stratford Olympic Park wards require a selective licence.
Newham has been one of the most active boroughs for property licensing enforcement since 2012. The current scheme covers all wards except Royal Victoria and Stratford Olympic Park.
By January 2025, there were 2,480 accredited landlords in the borough.
Action required
If you let property in Newham and have not applied for a licence, do so immediately. The Renters' Rights Act has increased maximum civil penalties for licensing offences to £40,000 and extended rent repayment orders to two years.
