Selective Licensing: Newham Borough-Wide Extension

Newham Council extended its borough-wide selective licensing scheme from August 2025. All privately rented dwellings in Newham require a licence. Fees have been updated and existing licence holders must reapply on renewal.

The London Borough of Newham extended its borough-wide selective licensing scheme from August 2025. Newham has operated a selective licensing scheme since 2013, making it one of the longest-running such schemes in England.

Every privately rented dwelling in Newham requires a selective licence. The application process requires landlords to provide evidence of gas and electrical safety compliance, confirm property management arrangements, and complete a fit and proper person assessment.

Unlicensed letting in Newham carries civil penalties of up to 30,000. The council operates an active enforcement team.
